Few things panic a CPAP user faster than plugging in at bedtime and getting nothing: no lights, no screen, no airflow. Sometimes the display lights up but stays blank. Sometimes the start button does nothing. At Advans CPAP, "CPAP won't turn on" and blank-screen calls are among the most common repair inquiries we handle every week.

This guide covers common causes on ResMed and Philips machines, safe at-home checks, and when professional CPAP repair beats replacing the whole unit.

Equipment troubleshooting only - not medical advice. For questions about your prescribed pressure or therapy plan, speak with your clinician or sleep provider.

Why a Dead or Blank CPAP Matters

When the machine will not power on, you lose therapy that night. Missed nights can show up in compliance data used for FAA medical exams and DOT physicals. Intermittent failures often become full failures without warning. Note whether the unit is fully dead or only the screen is blank.

What "Won't Turn On" Usually Looks Like

  1. Completely dead - No lights, no beep, no display, no motor sound
  2. Blank or black screen - A button LED may glow, but the LCD never shows menus
  3. Screen works, therapy will not start - Menus appear, but the blower never spins or stops quickly
  4. Intermittent power - Works some nights, then dies after travel, a bump, or a power outage

Safe At-Home Checks Before You Ship for CPAP Repair

Try these in order. Many "dead" machines are fixed by power-path issues outside the sealed base.

  1. Confirm the outlet. Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet. Fix the outlet or breaker if needed. Reset any tripped GFCI, then test the CPAP on a known-good wall outlet.
  • Inspect the power adapter and cord. Most modern CPAPs use an external power supply (the "brick"). Check for a cracked housing, melted smell, bent pins, a cord that only works at a certain angle, or a dark status LED (if yours has one). Unplug for 60 seconds, then reconnect firmly. Loose DC plugs cause many no-power nights.
  • Try a known-good, compatible adapter if you can. Use a spare factory-style supply that matches voltage and connector. Aftermarket bricks sometimes light a screen but cannot start the motor.
  • Remove the SD card and reseat accessories. A corrupted SD card can stall boot-up on some ResMed models. Power off, remove the card, wait a minute, and try again. Reseat the humidifier and heated hose.
  • Run a dry test and note partial power clues. Remove the water chamber and, if your model allows, detach the humidifier module. If the machine revives dry, the fault may be in the humidifier. If it stays dead, the base needs deeper diagnosis. Note any LED blink, screen flicker, motor try, or flash of an error.

A note on ozone cleaners: We do not recommend ozone or "activated oxygen" devices for CPAP gear. They can degrade materials and contribute to later power and board failures.

What Not to Do

  • Do not open the sealed base or probe the board with tools
  • Do not power the unit with a random laptop charger or wrong-voltage brick
  • Do not keep slamming the start button on a dead machine
  • Do not ignore burning smells, smoke, or a hot power brick - unplug immediately

Unsafe DIY electrical work can turn a simple adapter swap into a full control-board replacement.

Repair vs. Replace When Power Fails

A CPAP that will not turn on does not automatically mean replacement.

Repair is often better when the machine is roughly under 5-7 years old, you like your current setup, and the failure looks adapter-, display-, board-, or motor-related.

Replacement may make more sense when the unit is very old, multiple systems are failing, parts are scarce, or repair cost approaches a current machine.

At Advans CPAP we explain both options clearly. A proper check verifies the adapter under load, inspects the DC input, and shows whether a supply swap or deeper CPAP repair is required.

FAQ - CPAP Won't Turn On / Blank Screen

Is a blank screen the same as no power?

Not always. No power usually means no lights and no response. A blank screen can still have standby power while the display or control board has failed.

Can I keep using it if it only works every other night?

Intermittent power is a warning, not a long-term plan. Loose cords, failing bricks, and boards that brown out tend to get worse. Arrange diagnosis before a full dead night strands you.

Will removing the SD card fix a machine that will not boot?

Sometimes, especially on certain ResMed units with a corrupt card. If it starts after removal, try a fresh FAT32 card. If it stays dead with the card out, the problem is elsewhere.

Get Your Therapy Power Back

A CPAP that will not turn on - or that shows only a blank screen - is stressful, but it is usually diagnosable. Start with the outlet, adapter, connections, SD card, and a dry humidifier test. If the unit stays dead or the display never returns, professional CPAP repair can restore power without an unnecessary full-machine replacement.
